Felt Garden Tomatoes
Here Today, Gone Tomato
I absolutely love the look of vine-ripened tomatoes in the garden — round, vibrant, and full of life. Inspired by a two-year-old member request, we’re thrilled to finally bring you our Felt Garden Tomatoes project! This playful felt design includes both whole and halved tomatoes, offering the perfect variety to fill out your felt food market or add to a garden-themed display.

Despite its beginner-to-intermediate label, it’s still an excellent introduction to 3D felt-craft construction. You’ll learn how to shape and stuff your Felt Garden Tomatoes to give them that familiar, plump appearance, and how to attach the leafy tops for a polished finish. In addition, the halved tomato features tiny detached chain stitches to mimic seeds — a neat little detail that adds personality and realism to your handmade produce.
Bursting with color and deep-rooted symbolism, tomatoes represent abundance, vitality, and the simple joy of growing something with your own two hands. And while these Felt Garden Tomatoes might not be great for your salad, the charm, heart, and character they bring are definitely good for the soul. Lastly, they’re a sweet little reminder that your ideas matter to us.
We used bold red felt for our tomatoes, accented with green for the stems and a soft yellow embroidery thread to create the seeds. However, feel free to experiment with colors — think golden yellows, dusky purples, or soft pinks to represent heirloom varieties. You could also vary the sizes to create a more dynamic set. Because they’re soft-sculpted and lightweight, these tomatoes work beautifully for imaginative play, photo styling, or decorative displays in your kitchen or craft space.
Once your Felt Garden Tomatoes are stitched and stuffed, don’t forget to share them using #MadeWithLia.
Stitches used: Blanket stitch, whip stitch, ladder stitch, straight stitch, detached chain stitch

@Brooke
Back to the TopThe instructions are very difficult to understand when it comes to the half tomato, It is almost like full steps and explanation are missed. I have noticed this with a few of the projects that have photo tutorials.
Hello Brooke! And welcome. 🙂 I shared your comment with the designer, Krista, who made all the projects you have been working on.
Her response: “See #22: For the tomato half: Repeat steps 3 & 4”. “I try to be very thorough, but sewing is tricky because everyone comes in with different skills, and different ways of learning, so we try our best to cover as much as we can so that it makes sense”.
Something else that might be fun to watch is our little mini course on felt animals. The felt food has similar steps. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/tracks/felt-stuffies-8-easy-steps/
