We have made tons of classic and traditional flower designs out of metallic paper in the past, like roses, ranunculus and orchids. This is all well and good, but sometimes you just need to break outside the box! Our maker Meagan decided to switch things up by designing a gorgeous and unique king protea flower (the largest species of proteas).

Text Weight Metallic Paper — Coral, Botanic (discontinued; use Shine Moss or Fairway)
Tissue Paper – Green
4″ Foam Ball
Two 20 Gauge Floral Wires
Four 16 Gauge Floral Wires
Floral Tape — Bark
Art Markers — Peony, Baby Blossoms, Dim Green, Colorless Blender

King of the Flowers

Proteas, also called sugarbushes, grow all across the southern hemisphere, and they have a captivatingly wild look to them. To bring this paper protea to life, Meagan used foam for the base and art marker detailing for the petals. Read on for the full tutorial!

Steps

Gather the tools and materials listed above.
Cut the flower pieces according to the template at the bottom of the post. Use the PDF if you are cutting by hand or the SVG if you are using a cutting machine.
Using the foam cutter, shape one half of the foam ball into a cone.
Using Mod =Podge, glue the tissue paper squares to the foam ball until it is completely covered.

Hi Lia
Is there perhaps any guidance in how to shape the foamball into a cone please. Is there perhaps a tutorial for another flower that shows the technique, any guidance will be appreciated, many thanks. Dawn

  We do not use foam anymore, so we do not have a video for this technique. You can roll the ball on the hard surface and gently press down.

Hi.
For some reason I can’t open the PDF template. The document appears to open in Adobe and the name of the file is in the top left corner, but the file isn’t there.

Not sure if it’s your end or mine.

  Hey Nichole, I just checked the download and it’s fine on our end. Is it possible it’s opening in your web browser? That error happens a lot if the PDF isn’t downloaded then opened in a PDF program (Adobe Reader, Acrobat, Preview, etc).

    Thanks so much for looking into that. I didn’t realise until later in the day that the cause was just our internet having a little lie down for the day. We couldn’t even open a website or watch netflix by the end of the day but things seem to have righted themselves today.
    Sorry for wasting your time but thanks a heap for checking. x

Lia, I have followed you since the very beginning, and your flowers are just the most exquisite things on earth! I want to make every one! If I quit my job, can I make flowers from your patterns and sell them? Do you have a policy for the use of your patterns? Thanks so much for all the beauty you bring to our lives.
