Beginner Crepe Paper Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemum Connection
We’re so excited to invite you to our next FREE Crafternoon with Lia and Emily on Friday, September 19th at 12 pm PT! This month, we’re diving into these Beginner Crepe Paper Chrysanthemums —a fun, easy flower for any maker, big or small. Whether you’re crafting a bit of joy with your little ones or enjoying a creative respite, this project is all about finding balance in the process while making something beautiful.

True to the name, these Beginner Crepe Paper Mums are designed with simplicity in mind. For instance, the petals are cut in one strip with a small hole in the center, making them easy to slide onto floral wire and secure with glue. Using heavy crepe paper allows you to stretch the tips into tiny cups, giving the petals their signature look. For best results, pre-stretch your paper about 30% — a small step that makes cutting narrow strips much easier. Once shaped, let the creative transformation begin!
The beauty of paper flowers is that they’re endlessly customizable. While we’ll be demonstrating them in ruby, amber, and aubergine, you can choose any shades you like. Coordinate them to match your home décor, a special event, or simply your favorite palette. Of course, these Beginner Crepe Paper Mums will make a stunning display on their own, but you can also mix them with other crepe paper flowers for a vibrant, balanced bouquet.
We can’t wait to gather in creative fellowship with you during our Crafternoon and see the Beginner Crepe Paper Chrysanthemums you bring to life! Join us on Friday, September 19th at 12 pm PT for this fun, beginner-friendly workshop. And when your bouquets are complete, be sure to share them with us using the hashtag #MadeWithLia and post them in our crafters’ community to stay connected and inspired.

Leave a CommentHi Lia. I had a good time making this flower and learned a lot. I am somewhat visually impaired, so I had to alter the way I placed the petals. I could not see the very center of the cut petals to poke a hole, so I cut them in half and placed them individually. It was more labor-intensive, but the result was the same. I have a question regarding the weight of the crepe paper. Does it make a difference which weight of paper I use? Before I found your wonderful site, I bought a bunch of rolls off the internet. They seem to work well, and I want to use them rather than waste them. Over time I am purchasing more from your site.
For this flower, definitely use what you have. This flower is very forgiving, so you should have great results. I can also help you select more flowers that will complement the paper you have. We have a wide range of options to choose from. 🙂
We’re delighted you are here! We have another visually impaired person in our community, and she has found some great workarounds.
Made it this weekend! Loved how it turned out. However, the cut file has 6 of the small petals and the oval to cover the ball oriented in the opposite direction so the grain is wrong.
Also, would it be possible to separate the small, medium and large petals so you could cut petals for a smaller size flower?
Interesting. I just looked at the template, and it is not rotated, so I think Cricut must have turned them around. Grrrr. Ok, I am changing the groupings for the petals so it is easier to resize.
Thank you so much for sharing your projects I am so grateful
Please do share the SVG for the next event (three flowers which you will be teaching )
Thanks
You are welcome! We do have thousands of flower projects on our site for members. We also have the Creative Summit set of three available for sale in our shop, or it is free for Craft Circle members. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/tracks/2025-virtual-creative-summit/
Hi,
I have been making your crepe paper flowers for a while now and just cutting by hand. However, I just purchased a Cricut maker 4. I am trying to go back to download the svg files for flowers that I have already done with the pdf files. For some reason, it won’t let me download the svg files. When I open the files, the svg files are not available to download. I can see the file, but I cannot highlight them. Do you know what is going on? Thanks
I am guessing that the SVG files you are seeing might be zipped? Or… that you are trying to open them outside of Cricut Design Space. Here is a video that might be helpful, but if you are still having trouble, let me know and we can troubleshoot further. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-cricut-maker/lessons/1-lia-griffith-files-for-the-cricut/
Hello! I hope I am not overstepping, but I had this same issue and found that my computer has the same glitch where I try to download the cut files and they show as downloaded as a zip file, but when I extract the files the folder comes up empty! It also happens with downloads from Etsy or Creative Fabrica. Super annoying, but not the fault of the files on the website. My work-around for this has been to go to the website and login on my phone. I then download the files to my phone, go into the “Files” app (I have an iPhone) and unzip to see the files. Lastly, I email the unzipped file to myself. When I go to my email on my computer, I am able to download the cut file with zero problems. It’s an added step, but it’s the only way I have found a way around this issue. I tried to fix it on my computer with no positive outcome. I hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing this! I am going to pass it along to our dev team as well. We have not heard of this issue from more than a few, but it might be worth looking into on our side.
Hi Lia. I have downloaded the template for these mums, however, it is a PDF file and not an SVG file. I don’t see a link to download an SVG file and I don’t know if I can convert from PDF to SVG. Help? Thanks!
Hello Laura! Open the zipped folder containing the PDF, and you will find three files: the printable template, the tutorial, and the SVG file. We put everything into one folder for you to keep things organized. 🙂
Where can the crepe paper be bought in the UK please?
You can order it from our site. We are about to add a new shipping option that is better priced. If you are on our email list we will announce it. The other option might be Amazon. Since we do not control any of that, it is hard for us to know details.
I found that if I use a strong grip mat with the heavy crepe it holds so much better.
Yes! It needs that extra stick.
Hi
I cannot pull up the template for the chrysanthemum template
Where should I be looking?
It is in the right column above the tools and materials list.
Am I doing something wrong? your SVG are 12×12 and the paper I bought from you is around 10×12. I have to cut each twice to get the whole 12×12 cut.
They are all set up to work with the 12-inch-wide and 10-inch-tall. Ungroup the project, then attach the subgroups to keep everything in place for each layer. There will be three sheet of crepe to cut for each flower.
I cannot get them to print out this way. I ungrouped and tried that but some print out across the grain. The tiny cuts don’t seem to be attached (welded?)to the petals. I get a sheet of tiny cuts and nothing on the petals. I’m obviously doing something wrong.
Hi Connie! Once you have uploaded it into Design Space, open the main file in the right column so the arrow is pointing down, and you can see the subgroup. Hide the designer notes (marked with a red exclamation point). Then select one subgroup and click the “attach” paperclip icon at the bottom of that column. Repeat for each of the subgroups. Note that the last subgroup might need to be sized down just a bit so it does not rotate. I need to fix that but have not had time. 🙂 Let me know if that works for you. I am here to help.
Thanks. I will give that a try.
These are so gorgeous! Do you have to be a paid member to access the template? I see that it’s a free crafternoon workshop, but wasn’t sure if you need to pay for the template. I’m so excited to make some of these!
This is a freebie! Templates included. Hope you can join us on Friday!
How many total petals do we need for each flower? I need to modify my cut file for a smaller cutting machine. Looking forard to the live time!
Ava
Hi Ava! Looking forward to this class too! For reference, you can look at the PDF template for the quantity of each piece. Since I can’t remember off the top of my head, I am looking at that right now. lol. Petal A (small)—31, Petal B—29, Petal C—24. Honestly, though, it can be plus or minus for each. They ended up at this exact quantity to fill the sheet for the cut.
Hi, have you noticed the PDF says it is a crepe chocolate cosmo spray?
Whoops! Fixing now. 🙂
Hi Lia,
Would you recommend your heavy or fine crepe paper for these. I’ve learned the hard way that they are not always interchangeable. =)
Hi Jenica! This post was from before we had our own line of crepe paper, but we do have some more recent posts that use both the heavy crepe paper and the extra fine crepe paper. For this particular pattern the heavy crepe paper would be the closest. Here’s the more recent posts if you would like to reference them!
Crepe Paper Mums for Fall – Heavy
Crepe Paper Mums – Extra Fine
We hope this helps!
I especially love Fall too! These look so beautiful, and not too hard to make, lovely project!
Thanks so much, Lori!
Hi, what gauge is the wire for the flowers that you use? Sometimes in other flower titorials you use a foam ball, what size is taht one too. I need to buy everything oevr the internet and its difficult to estimate from a picture only
Hi Alina, I use both 18 and 20 gauge wires, and 1/2″ foam balls 🙂
Hi LÃa!! These flowers are so beautiful!!! Could you tell me which crepe paper colour did you used in te tutorial? I have to make some greek inspired centrepieces and i was thinking about making some bouganvillea, and I thinking that’s the perfect colour. Do you have any tutorials about this flowers? Thank you very much!!!
So happy to hear you like these flowers! I honestly do not remember what the color is called for the red crepe paper…but I do know that it is Carte Fini brand, so I would browse their red section and pick out the one that you like 🙂 I do not have any bougainvillea templates, but that is a great suggestion for a future project. Best of luck on your centerpieces!!
the flowers are lovely I will be making some of them
Hope you have fun making them. Please share pictures of your creations with us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/liagriffith.hyl
I love your idea of how to make feathers. On January 14, 2014, Susan said she was going to make an eagle for her son’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor. My grandson is about to receive his Eagle Scout and I would like to do something similar.
At first I thought about using crepe paper for the texture but decided it would be difficult to write on. I am thinking of using white tissue paper and chalking the edges in brown. What do you think of this?
Do you have a pattern for an eagle head that you can share with me?
You are so creative and I love reading about all your ideas on Pinterest!
Thank you for all your help!
Jean
Hello! I think you grandson is going to love it! Unfortunately I have not made an Eagle yet so Id on’t have a pattern for you. Would love to see pictures when you are done! Thank you for your support:)
They are so beautiful! 🙂
Thank you, I love Mums!
… a wonderful tutorial of mums again. I love your paper mums!!! And now these mums are beautiful too. Thanks for sharing. 😉 <3
I love mums too, such a happy flower. Hard to not smile when you see them;-)
Beautiful!… Also this might seem like a strange question, but what hot glue gun do you use? It looks like it has a very nice fine nib..
Hi. I love this one because of the fine tip. Here is a link to it on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001689XCQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=211189&creative=373489&creativeASIN=B001689XCQ&link_code=as3&tag=liagrihanyoul-20&linkId=BIUYSP4U27XAJA2N
Where do you find your crepe paper from and it there a certain type I should look for?
Hi Tammy, I love Italian Crepe Paper, I get mine from Carte Fini.
Thanks for sharing this tutorial. The flowers looks great. I will try this for sure.
Hope you love it! I really like the texture the crepe paper adds:)
These are more lovely than live mums!
Thank you! I have a huge smile on my face right now;-)
