Papercut Art for Winter Decor
It is time to start thinking about changing your decor to a winter theme! I always look for quick and easy decor ideas with a lot of WOW, and this framed piece does just that!
If you have a personal cutting machine, this project can be crafted in less than 30 minutes. You can add your creativity by picking your favorite colors of cardstock and adding your flair. How cute would it be to add a bit of glitter?

Let's Make This!
- Choose your frame: These natural wood painting panels from Woodpeckers are the best bases for papercut artwork. They are a simple, one-piece, but hearty structure that you can either paint or even leave as a natural wood finish. Remember, this project is designed for a square frame.
- Pick your cardstock: When designing this project, I chose a different color for each of the six layers. You can create your color palette with the cardstock you have on hand or use the link below to find the blues and whites in the photos.
Fun Designer Tip: Use a gradient of colors, with the darkest in the back and moving to the top layer and the lightest color. This method adds a perceived depth to the design. - Cut your cardstock: This is an ideal project for a cutting machine! The SVG file is created in layers and set up to automatically align when stacked. You can resize the art to fit into your chosen square frame.
- Prepare your frame: Once you have all six layers cut, you can see how they look inside your wooden panel frame and decide if you like the natural wood look or to add a pretty color to the frame. If you paint, let the wood completely dry before adding the papercut layers.
- Let's assemble: Start by attaching the back of the frame with bright white paper so your snow will pop through the first layer of your papercut art.
Place the riser squares onto the back of the first papercut layer and align it into the frame. Repeat this with each layer.
You can add as many risers as you feel you need.
Share the Joy!
And there you are! A beautiful, handmade papercut art to display year after year.
Not only did I make one for my winter mantel, but I also made a second for a housewarming gift. I love sharing joy with my winter crafting, and I know the receiver will treasure this elegant art.
So, I want to encourage you to join me in crafting a beautiful winter holiday! Create your gifts with joy and pass them along to your friends and family. Joy is the gift that keeps on giving. ;-) ~ Lia

Leave a CommentI love this! I want to make lots to give to all my friends. Maybe each will be with slightly wcolors to show their whims. Thank you
Yes! Personalize with colors. Love that. 🙂
Bonjour,
Thank you for this very nice free, but I can’t realize it.
I have a Silhouette Cameo but she accepts that files in DXF .
I can’t do anything with SVG. It’s a shame.
Sincerely
Silhouette will accept and SVG if you have the updated software.
I have a CAMEO 4 with Business/Designer edition Silhouette software. The software will import the SVG file (really just the picture of the finished piece) but not the different layers. Is there a strategy for getting the separate layers?
Yes! We have a class for you and it taught by Kelly who is a Silhouette expert. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-silhouette-cameo/
This says it’s free and I get your newsletter but it is requiring a sign in.
Yes. If you sign up again it will recognize you and not stack our emails. 🙂
I love all of the papercut art projects. I love rotating them during the year to keep the decor interesting. They also make lovely but quick gifts. If you’re ever taking suggestions I’d love to see a 3D artwork featuring the squirrel that you have in your latest gold wreath. 🐿️ 🙏
Great idea!! That wreath art could be made into a piece of layered art. It is so pretty. 🙂
Hi Lia and team, I’m still without a cutting machine (and won’t buy one), could you pse offer a pdf template? The zip file only contents svg. Tutorial is not necessary to be added, only the pdf template. I did not find one in October collection or older/ former projects.
Tks
Kerstin
Sure! I will add that right now. Anything for you. 😉
Thank you Lia. For this actual help and for any other helping whenever there’s a little problem and help or assistance is required. Have a good time

Kerstin
I want to see your hand cut version! Please share.
Hello, is this possible to get this project in PDF? thank you
I have added a PDF download! Enjoy!
I am trying to find the .pdf for the winter birds.
I would like to do by hand. I do not have a cutting machine.
Thanks in advance for your response.
There is a download for the PDF which is a 10×10 right under the SVG download.
Thank you for making this available!
You are welcome!
Could you make this into a card format?
You sure can! For this sponsored post, we focused on the artwork. You can resize this to fit an envelope.
